Fundraising Superheroes Episode 15: The Toronto Humane Society Shares How their Big Events and Consistent Messaging Has Helped Connect Them With Donors

The Toronto Humane Society helps animals not only find forever homes, but educates the community on the humane care and protection of all animals. This episode we got to talk to their Public Relations Specialist Hannah Sortropa. As a long time animal lover she started off as a volunteer at the shelter moving her way up to the communications department.

Hannah talked about their big events like Happy Tails that brought in over $100,000 last year, and their smaller events like bunny yoga which would normally run around Easter. The most important thing that the Humane Society does however is keep their donors up to date with what’s happening at the shelter.

Toronto Humane Society's monthly newsletter appropriately titled "The Scratching Post” gives all the information on how the organization is helping the animals in the shelter. Whether it be a successful adoption or medical procedure shows donors directly what their money is going towards. Hannah encourages organizations to "have consistent messaging, be clear and be concise with exactly what it is that your audience is listening so they know precisely who and what they are giving to”.
